Chief Financial Officer Job Description Template
A Chief Financial Officer leads all financial operations and strategy, ensuring the company has the capital, reporting infrastructure, and financial discipline to achieve its goals. They are a key strategic partner to the CEO and board on fundraising, M&A, and long-range planning.
Responsibilities
- Own all financial reporting: P&L, balance sheet, cash flow, and board-level financial packages
- Lead financial planning and analysis (FP&A): annual budget, quarterly forecasts, and scenario modelling
- Manage investor relations, board reporting, and fundraising processes
- Build and lead the finance and accounting team
- Oversee legal, compliance, and risk management in partnership with external counsel
- Identify opportunities to optimise the cost structure and improve unit economics
Requirements
- 10+ years of finance experience with 3+ years in a CFO or VP Finance role
- Track record managing finances at a high-growth startup through a major fundraise or exit
- Deep expertise in SaaS financial metrics: ARR, NRR, LTV, CAC, burn rate
- Strong command of GAAP/IFRS accounting principles
- Excellent board-level communication and ability to synthesise complex financial data
Nice to Have
- CPA, ACA, or ACCA qualification
- Experience managing an M&A process or IPO preparation
- Investment banking or private equity background
